The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has put Easthampton at a high risk level for West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).
EYSA is taking the following actions to address this risk:
- Shortening all week night 5:30 p.m. games to 20 minute halves;
- Requesting that all players and coaches are off the fields by 6:25 p.m.;
- Asking coaches and parents to use their judgment in evaluating field conditions;
- If mosquitos are present, ending or cancelling the outdoor activity.
Precautions (from Massachusetts Department of Public Health recommendations for preventing mosquito bites brochure):
Peak times for mosquitoes are from dusk to dawn. Use mosquito repellent any time you are outdoors, but especially during peak times. And remember, being outside even a short time can be long enough to get a mosquito bite. If weather permits, wear long-sleeves, long pants and socks. Use mosquito netting on baby carriages or play yards when your baby is outdoors.
Bug repellant is available at the Shack.
